A typical feature of couperosis is conspicuous redness over a large area due to visible, burst red veins on the skin. These appear mainly in the cheek and nose area as well as in the décolleté. Intense laser light can obliterate the fine veins so that the body subsequently breaks them down naturally. We offer this laser therapy in our dermatological beauty practice.

Everything you need to know about laser couperose removal

Here you will find all the important information about the permanent removal of couperose by laser by dermatologist DR. MEK in Berlin-Charlottenburg.

In couperosis, congested blood dilates the vessels so that fine veins become visible under the skin. The condition occurs mainly on the face. It usually starts with a temporary reddening of the nose and/or cheeks. Over time, however, the colouring occurs more frequently and for longer periods of time until the affected areas eventually remain permanently reddish.

The exact reason for the development of couperosis is still unknown. It has been established that a genetically conditioned weak connective tissue plays an important role. So do risk factors including coffee, alcohol, smoking, spicy food, sauna, strong sunlight and anything else that dilates the blood vessels.

Statistically, women are affected by this skin redness significantly more often than men.  It is particularly common in women over 30 years with fair skin and blond or reddish hair

From a medical point of view, couperosis is largely harmless; for those affected, it is often primarily an aesthetic issue. However, couperosis can be the precursor of rosacea. This is a chronic inflammation of the skin with redness, vasodilatation and pustules which is often unpleasant and painful. A laser treatment can have a preventive effect here so that rosacea does not develop in the first place.

The dilated veins that cause couperose are obliterated by targeted laser beams, whereupon they are no longer supplied with blood. As a result, the previously visible veins become invisible.

In our practice we use the laser “Alma Harmony XL Pro”, one of the best medical lasers available on the market. The state-of-the-art device offers tailored treatment solutions for every skin type and age group thanks to the effective combination of therapies.

The Alma Harmony XL Pro is approved for 65 medical and cosmetic treatments and therefore has a wide range of applications. In addition to the removal of couperose, these include the removal of scars and pigment spots as well as the treatment of acne. It can also be used for skin rejuvenation and permanent hair removal.

Extensive clinical studies have proven each technique and treatment with our type of laser to be safe to conduct by a trained medical professional.

First of all, we do a detailed medical examination in order to determine the correct setting of the laser individually based on your skin type and the severity of the couperosis.

It is also important for us to understand which medications you have been taking before the treatment, as some medications can make the skin more sensitive to light what must be taken into account accordingly.

One session lasts about 20 minutes. How many sessions you require depends on the extent of the couperose. As a rule, 2 to 4 sessions at intervals of 4 weeks should be sufficient.

Treatment with the laser is relatively painless. Nevertheless, we apply an anaesthetic cream to the affected skin area before each session to make the treatment as comfortable as possible for you.

The treatment is gentle on the skin and leaves no scars. The surrounding tissue is usually not affected. In addition, you require no downtime after the treatment. However, the use of the laser can often cause redness and skin irritation in the treated area, which usually disappear within 7 days. We usually apply a soothing cream after the treatment.

For the first few days after the treatment, refrain from strenuous activities that make you sweat, as the sweat on the treated area may burn.

In addition, you should protect the treated areas from sunlight with sun cream (sun protection factor 50) for the first 4 weeks follwoing the treatment. The ideal time for laser therapy are therefore the autumn and winter months.

The price for a session starts from 250 Euros for self-payers. In some instances, treatment costs are covered by private health insurance. Please clarify this directly with your health insurance.
