Bruxism treatment with Botox

✔ Effective against teeth grinding

✔ Alternative to rails

✔ Long-lasting effect

The medical term for teeth grinding is bruxism. If this is not treated, it can have serious consequences for teeth and jaws in the long run. In addition, many of those affected suffer from headaches. An effective method against nocturnal teeth grinding is treatment with botulinum toxin (Botox).

Everything you need to know about bruxism treatment with Botox

Here you will find the most important information about the treatment of bruxism with Botox in our dermatological private practice in Berlin-Charlottenburg.

First, we discuss with you how the use of Botox can help in your case and what the possibilities and limits of the treatment are. The actual treatment itself only takes a few minutes and is relatively painless.

Provided there are no objections from a medical point of view, botulinum toxin (Botox) is injected into the jaw muscles. Here it immobilises and relaxes the muscles.

Botox does not work immediately, but the result is only noticeable about 7 days after the treatment, with the maximum being reached after about 4 weeks. The effect usually lasts 3 to 6 months, depending on the metabolism and muscular activity.

The dosage depends on the contraction force of the muscle. In case of doubt, we act according to the principle “less is more”. If the effect is not strong enough after four weeks, there is the option of injecting Botox again.

Yes, the masticatory muscle does not become completely slack due to the Botox. You can eat, chew and speak perfectly fine after the treatment. The muscle is only slightly relaxed, so that only the nightly teeth grinding stops.

In very rare cases, it is possible that the body has many antibodies against botulinum toxin or can form these antibodies for a short time. In this case, the botulinum toxin is rapidly broken down, so that the desired effect does not occur. Whether this is the case can, however, be checked in advance with the help of a simple blood sample.

The price for treatment with Botox against teeth grinding is about 500 Euros. The exact costs depend on the amount of Botox injected and the use of other agents and medications if necessary. In most cases, the treatment costs are covered by private health insurance.
